Communication within a team. From group to team

Based on the methodology of PATRICK LENCIONI:

“FIVE DYSFUNCTIONS OF A TEAM”

This is a Team Coaching Session (duration optional: from 8 to 16 hours), based on the methodology of Patrick Lencioni – one of the world’s leading experts in team building, leadership, and communication, and the author of multiple best-selling books. This method is the result of over 30 years of hands-on work with a wide variety of teams across the globe. It provides an excellent way for team members to better understand themselves, get to know their colleagues, reflect on their daily work, and decide: where are we strong, and where do we need to improve?

This methodology is your team’s path to a new level of performance.

Objectives of the Session:

  • Get to know yourself better

  • Get to know your colleagues better

  • Understand your role in the team

  • Co-create the “Dream Team” together

The first question in this coaching session is: Are you a group or a team?

TEAM:

  • RELATIONSHIPS: Interdependence

  • ORIENTATION: Shared commitment

  • GOALS: Ability to formulate goals together

  • DECISIONS: Made collectively

Regardless of the answer, this question alone sparks reflection: What determines our identity? What do we need to do to become even better than yesterday, even stronger than today?

What is the recipe for a successful, dream team?

During this team coaching session, participants will be introduced to the 5 major threats (dysfunctions) that teams face. It takes only one dysfunction to put the team at risk.
Even one, like a virus, can begin to undermine even the most successful teams.

So what are these 5 dysfunctions – the greatest threats to a team?

During the session, participants will work in small groups to identify:

  1. Are we a team or just a group? And what is the real difference?

  2. Do any of these five dysfunctions exist in our team? If yes, how do they show up?

  3. How can we transform these threats into positive opportunities?

  4. How well do we know each other? What’s missing?

  5. What is our path to team success?

Each of the five dysfunctions is discussed in dedicated group sessions.

Additionally, using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), we’ll explore:

  • Metaprograms and profiling of yourself and your colleagues (Metaprograms are psychological filters that determine what kind of information we accept or reject, how we process it, and how we react. It’s a typological method for understanding personal and others' thinking styles, helping to adapt and communicate more effectively).

  • Calibration of colleagues and building rapport (connection and harmony with others).

We’ll focus on 7 essential questions:

  1. What do I avoid in my team?

  2. What situations do I sidestep?

  3. What am I currently not taking advantage of?

  4. Where am I not using my full potential?

  5. What beliefs or limiting thoughts are behind these avoidances?

  6. What can I do right now?

  7. How can knowledge of metaprograms help me better understand myself and my colleagues – and find my place in the team?

We’ll also practically explore Gestalt Theater Therapy techniques: It’s not enough to say “build a relationship with your colleague” – you have to act.

Only through action can the gestalt (past experiences that shape current reactions) be closed, making room for new awareness and experience.

In the theater, there are no taboos, no societal norms – everything is fiction. This freedom allows participants to explore different versions of themselves. These methods enable participants to practically try out the “tools” introduced in training, using role-play. The trainer’s question – “What does this say about YOU?” – helps integrate these new experiences into real life.

Group work presentations:

Results from the group work are presented to everyone.
Then, with the help of the coach, all groups work together to formulate a final action plan:

  1. How exactly do we transform these threats into opportunities in our team?

  2. What does each of us need to do to evolve from a group into a team?

The action plans are presented, and then all are merged into one unified team action plan.

The goal of this session:

Transform the 5 threats into 5 opportunities that allow you to create a strong and effective team.

Traits of an effective team

The recipe for a successful team according to Patrick Lencioni:

  • The secret to a successful team does not lie in mastering complex theories, but in the ability to combine common sense, determination, and exceptional discipline.

  • Teams that succeed are not the ones that gather the most talented individuals, but the ones that foster simple human relationships.

  • These relationships – and the willingness to be vulnerable within the team – help overcome the cultural beliefs of Western societies that often prevent:

    • Trust from growing

    • Productive conflict from occurring

    • Accountability from taking root

    • Collective results from being achieved

And finally…

Participants anchor the session’s work by connecting with their inner power and positive beliefs. End of session activity:

  • Walking on glass

or (weather permitting)

  • Walking on fire

Why?

Knowing how to walk on fire (or glass) can dramatically improve our lives. Even if you don’t do it physically, knowing that you could can boost your confidence and motivation. Why? Because these exercises demonstrate how our thoughts influence everything in our lives. Thoughts change brain chemistry, which then affects the entire body. Those who think positively live very different lives from those who think negatively. They experience much lower levels of stress – and this leads to excellent results.

So, let’s try it!

GROUP:

•RELATIONSHIPS: Independent of each other

•ORIENTATION: Individual Commitment

•GOALS: Goals are formulated by others

•SOLUTIONS: Conforming
