Public Speaking Without Fear: 5 Steps to Turn Your Words into a Tool of Influence

Public Speaking – More Than Just Words

Public speaking is not just the ability to speak words. It is an art that requires not only clear thinking but also inner freedom. Often, people focus all their attention on fear rather than on structure and impact. But did you know that a clear speech structure is one of the most powerful tools to combat anxiety? It provides a sense of security and channels your energy from fear toward your goal.

We invite you to explore 5 essential steps that will help you prepare not just a good, but a memorable public speech.

How to Craft a Speech: 5 Structural Steps

The best examples of rhetoric always have a solid foundation - a logical and coherent structure. This allows the audience to follow your ideas and helps you feel in control of the situation.

1. Clear Goal and Core Message (One Main Point)

Before you start writing, ask yourself: what is the one thing the audience should remember?

  • Example: If your speech is about climate change, your goal should not be just to inform, but to encourage participation in a local tree-planting initiative.

  • Message: One strong, easily memorable phrase that becomes the backbone of your speech. Everything in your speech should lead back to this central idea.

2. Hook and Opening Ritual (Emotional Engagement)

The first 30 seconds are crucial. You need to capture the audience’s attention and immediately establish an emotional connection.

Use the so-called hooks:

  • Shocking Fact: “Did you know that 90% of people experience the same anxiety when speaking in public?”

  • Personal Story: A short, authentic, and relevant anecdote related to your topic.

  • Rhetorical Question: A question that immediately gets the audience thinking.

3. Three Main Points (Logic and Consistency)

Human memory best retains information in three blocks. Divide your speech into three main parts, each supported by evidence, examples, or stories.

  • Part 1: Problem (Why is this important?)

  • Part 2: Solution (What can we do?)

  • Part 3: Vision and Impact (How will this change our future?)

4.  Impact Techniques: How Leaders Speak

To be heard, a good structure alone is not enough. You need authenticity and conscious use of rhetorical techniques.

  • Discover authenticity through pause. One of the biggest mistakes is trying to fill every moment of silence. A pause is not empty space – it is a powerful tool to create emotional tension and emphasize the importance of your words.

Think of it as giving space to yourself and your audience. Let your words “settle.”

  • Work with body language (not just hands). Your posture and facial expressions speak louder than your voice. Learn to consciously use:

    • Eye Contact: Establish a brief, personal connection with 3–5 people in the audience per paragraph.

    • “Anchoring”: Use movement to divide space. For example, speak about the problem while standing in one spot, and about the solution while moving to another. This visually reinforces your points.

5. Strong Slogan and Call to Action

Never end a speech with just a thank you. The last sentence should be the strongest.

  • Summarize your core message (see Step 1).

  • Provide a call to action: What should the audience do immediately after your speech? (Sign up, start, read, reflect.)

  • End with a slogan: A memorable, inspiring phrase that leaves an emotional impact.

Rhetoric – The Art of Free People

Public speaking is not an obligation, but a gift. With a clear structure (5 steps) and powerful rhetorical techniques (pause, movement, body language), you can not only overcome fear but also let your authenticity and professionalism shine.
