Spiritual intelligence - the true power of a leader
Neurophysiological research from the 1990s revealed that the quality of human activity and adaptation depends not only on the standard Intelligence Quotient (IQ) but also on emotional (EQ) and spiritual (SQ) maturity. The word “spiritual” originates from the Latin word spiritus, meaning “that which gives vitality to a system.” Thus, spirituality is understood as the strengthening of life force, the ability to overcome difficulties, and the search for a better way of living. Since ancient times, people have referred to this as wisdom or inner strength; science now calls this ability to navigate oneself and the surrounding world spiritual intelligence (SQ).
This has nothing to do with religion or any particular belief system. It describes a person’s ability to set goals, find meaning in their actions, and live a harmonious life.
People with high spiritual intelligence know how to find peace and harmony within themselves, with those around them, and with the environment they live in. They know how to be happy and help others discover that within themselves.
Such individuals promote change and societal renewal, bring fresh energy and vitality to any activity they engage in. They are like trees that, even after the strongest storm, straighten back up and continue to grow.
Excerpt from Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall’s book Spiritual Capital: Wealth We Can Live By:
“Spiritual wisdom allows us to play the ‘infinite game.’ It allows us to ‘play with the boundaries.’ It allows us to change the rules or create new ones. It allows us to criticize what exists and dream of what could be. This wisdom enables us to imagine possibilities for situations that do not yet exist. It is the wisdom of transformation, breaking down the old whole and creating a new one. In this way, we can let go of old models of action and outdated ways of thinking, view problems and situations in a new, broader context, abandon old motives, and move toward a higher motivation. Thus, spiritual wisdom is the foundation for strategic thinking, helping us to look at our strategy from the outside and redefine it.”
